Application of pharmacogenomic strategies to the study of drug-induced birth defects.Leeder JS, Mitchell AA Department of Pediatrics, Section of Developmental Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics, Kansas city, Missouri, USA. sleeder@cmh.edu Approximately 3% of all infants are born with one or more major birth defects, resulting in >150,000 affected babies each year in the US alone. At present, birth defects account for more than 21% of all infant deaths, making them the leading cause of infant mortality. Although the etiology and determinants of individual susceptibility are largely unknown for most congenital malformations, pharmacogenomic analyses offer promise for the future.
